All About Mrs. Martin
Hello, I am Mrs. Martin. I am proud to say that this is my fourteenth year to teach at Lynnville-Sully Elementary School. I taught Title I Reading for one year, third grade for one year, and this is my twelfth year to teach second grade. Prior to teaching at Lynnville-Sully, I was a substitute teacher for a year in the Pella School District and a School Psychologist for 10 years with Heartland AEA (including serving the L-S School District for a year). I have a BS in Psychology from the University of Iowa and a Specialist Degree in School Psychology from Iowa State University. I have teaching endorsements in School Psychology, K-6 Teaching, and K-8 Reading.
My family includes my husband, Rich, who is originally from Massachusetts. He is currently in private practice as a psychologist. Rich loves to come into my classroom to read to the students and teach them about Massachusetts (where they say "bubbler" instead of "drinking fountain" and "rubbish" instead of "garbage" or "trash"). I have three children: Jacob is in the Political Psychology Ph.D. program at Stony Brooke State University of New York, Hannah has a Bachelors degree in social work and works with people with head/brain injuries, and Isaiah is attending the University of Iowa majoring in actuarial science, mathematics, and statistics. All three of my children enjoy visiting my classroom on their days off of school to read to the students, hang out with them during recess, or just help out around the classroom. I also have two box turtles named Star and Sugar (currently living with Hannah) and a recently adopted Alaskan Husky/kangaroo mix named Sadie. My family lives in Pella, about two miles from Lake Red Rock.
My favorite thing about teaching is working with the students. When I was a school psychologist, I spent the majority of my time in meetings and completing paperwork. Being in the classroom allows me to work directly with children every day. I love the funny things that they say, watching their interactions with their peers, and helping them problem solve and make good choices. Aren't kids great?!
